"Somewhat akin to what Microsoft did," said Mr. Narayana Murthy, when he announced to the Press on 10th January 2002 that come March 31st, he would hand over charge of running the company to Nandan Nilekani, the present Chief Operating Officer (COO) and Managing Director. Nandan will now be the President, CEO and Managing Director of the Indian Software giant, Infosys Technologies Limited "Of course, I will continue to be full-time Chairman of the Board because it's difficult to separate myself from Infosys," he added.
In the changing scenario, Mr. Gopalakrishnan (Kris) also a co-founders and present Deputy Managing Director will be the new Chief Operating Officer (COO).
The announcement is seen as a positive step as the company grows and if the impressive third quarter results are any indication, then Infosys has stood its ground as a global company despite market conditions. Mr. Narayana Murthy said, "Success of Infosys depends on how smart we are in producing the next generation of leaders." He explained that his role would now focus on developing leadership in the company and communicating with thought leaders in the outside world.
While making a presentation on the company's third quarter results, Mr. Nandan Nilekani said that the period saw "price pressures, cancellations, contributions from large customers were down, but the environment remained challenging." In reply to question on the general employee morale at Infosys in what is being regarded as a gloomy market scenario despite Infosys' impressive results, Mr. Nilekani said, "I think the morale is very high. I think the last nine months has shown to us that even if times are bad we are able to get all the things together, we've been able become lean, efficient and productive."
Mr. Nilekani felt honoured that the Board has chosen him to be the CEO and felt it was a big responsibility since there would be great expectations of company performance from all the stakeholders under his charge. "I think the Infosys strategy has always been something that we've all worked out together and team effort would continue to remain the strategy of the company. I have a fine set of people to work with and I'm looking forward to the challenges and we would continue to see that Infosys makes its mark in the world."
Like Mr. Narayana Murthy said, "The name of the game is that we'll all rally behind a new leader." Comforting words for Nandan Nilekani & Co.
